In the book of Genesis, God describes the weakness and hopelessness of man without a woman. God knew that His purpose could not be fulfilled by man alone and that there was a need for a companion who will complement the man’s effort in the fulfillment of God’s agenda (Genesis Chapter 2).
In Genesis 3:15, God again demonstrated His eternal purpose for women in His plan. Therefore God chose the woman as the means through which redemption which is God’s uttermost purpose would be fulfilled. ‘And I will put enmity between you and your seed; he shall bruise your head. And you shall bruise his heel’. This simply means that God’s plan of procreation was to be made possible through the woman.
Women have since been the tool that has aided the fulfillment of God’s prophetic word in the lives of individuals, families and nations. Rebecca, for instance served as an instrument to savage God’s plan. She aided her son, Jacob to receive the blessings of the family because of her understanding into the divine ordinance and the destinies of her children. Rebecca knowing very well that Esau was the wrong son to receive the blessings of the family did all she could to make Jacob rather fulfill the prophecy. This special blessing was divinely planned to be transferred from Abraham to Isaac and to Jacob and then to his twelve sons who will form the foundation of Israel as God’s nation.
The role of women such as Moses’ mother who singlehandedly defied all odds and rules to protect her son from being killed like any other Hebrew baby at the time is worth mentioning. She sacrificed her life and pleasure to raise up Moses who later became the deliverer of Israel (Exodus 2:1---). We cannot forget Zipporah, Moses’ wife who delivered Moses from death (Exodus 4:24-26) on the way to Egypt. It is unfair to talk about the exploits of Moses in delivering Israel from Egypt to the promise land without mentioning the place of Moses’ mother and Zipporah, his wife because they preserved Moses’ life.
